How to decorate for those long days of Winter
I’m sitting here in my living room, while under a Winter Storm Warning that’s suppose to start at 4am tomorrow, and I struggle with motivation. Winter tends to deplete me of creative inspiration and I really have to dig deep to find any source of creativity in my mind. At the same time, this time of year I find the most crucial to take care of myself and my home. I combat this by keeping everything as simple as possible. Below is how I embrace my least favorite time of year with a hug.
My Personal Winter Decor Tips:
1. Keep it simple. After going all out during the holidays, relish in that feeling of newness as you pack it all away. Scale back on what you put out on display. Give your mind a break and create a place of minimalism. Make your surroundings a fresh start for the new year and a place that will allow yourself to grow in the coming months.
2. Bring the outside in. What are the colors your see on a vibrant winters day? Here in my neck of the woods it's fresh whites, sparkling silvers, and deep forest greens. Bring those colors inside to feel connected to the whimsy and magic that winter brings. It's easy to get bogged down during this harsh season and feel disconnected. Bringing the natural beauty into your home will help ground you during these months.
3. Greenery is always in. My Christmas tree is down but keeping my garland up around my fireplace makes for a seamless transition into the long winter ahead. Not to mention it looks beautiful. I also keep white lights intertwined throughout my garland to add a bit of glow to my living room. On the grayest days it instantly lifts my spirits and creates a cozy and welcoming environment.
4. Don't underestimate the power of aromatherapy. Whether you prefer to use candles, essential oils, or a pot on top of the stove filled with natural ingredients, it doesn't matter. Fresh clean scents like mint, peppermint, or pine will help you stay focused and keep your mind feeling sharp. Cater to all five of your senses in your home. When this happens feeling calm and at peace comes naturally.
5. Open a window. Yes, this one may sound crazy and it's not technically a decor tip, but I like to think of this one as a good for the soul tip. It may be 25 degrees outside but fresh air does amazing things for the body. Opening up a window for 10 minutes to allow in a fresh winters wind will give your home a feeling of newness and cleanliness. Allow yourself to breathe in deeply. I open my windows whenever I'm decorating or cleaning. I can't explain it but I'm convinced both myself and my home are better for it.
This may be a simple list but that is my goal. Creating a place of growth is so important in the new year. When you find yourself cooped up in your home during the winter months, take the opportunity to cultivate your vision for the next 365 days.
This may end up being your most favorite time of the year.
